Vicinity of the San Andreas Fault, east side of Swarthout Canyon Road along Cajon Creek south of its crossing, San Bernardino National Forest, San Bernardino Mountains; west of Route 1-15. Elevation 2670-2720 feet. Margins of wash with boulders of metamorphic, granitic gneiss, schist substrate, well-drained sand, gravel. Dominants: Eriogonumfasciculatum, Platanus racemosa, Lupinus spp., Eriodictyum trichocalyx. Common annual herb, flowers pale magenta-pink with darker stripes on petals, leaves mostly basal, erect, stems prostrate, fruits erect; size of plant extremely variable. Steven R.
