Mesic deciduous forest, low on slopes rising abruptly from floodplain of creek; infrequent. Abaxial surfaces of leaflets green (not glaucous), shiny; colonial, with many young, vegetative shoots surrounding reproductive ones; young shoots trifoliolate, whereas mature, reproductive ones pentafoliolate.
