97. Eschscholtzia californica Cham.
University of California campus, Berkeley, on an artificial
clay bank.
Flowers crocus-like in shape, never fully expanding but re-
maining nearly cylindric, swollen in the middle. Petals irregularly
dentate or erose across the summit, the apex acute. Stamens few.
Stigmas not developed and no fruit formed.
