HOLOTYPE
Sphaeroplea fragilis Buchheim et Hoffman
Mature orange zygotes formed in culture.
Culture isolate obtained from germinated zygotes of
an original isolate obtained in 1981 by Dr. R. C. Starr.
The original isolate was derived from zygotes in a
soil sample collected in 1933 by Dr. J. Proskauer from
a cow pasture 7.4 km west of Lemoncove, CA, on the
south side of California highway 198. The mature
zygotes in this specimen were formed in a flask
culture containing Volvox medium and inoculated on
6/28/82 and maintained at 19-26* C with illumination
provided by Cool-White fluorescent lamps on a 12.12
hour LD cycle at 180-240 ^iEin./m2/s. Zygotes were
collected and mounted on 8/23/82.
