Spirogyra hymerae n. sp.
Vegetative cells 83-92 x 43-256^, with plane end walls; 2-4 chromatophores,
usually 3, making 0.5-2 turns in the cell; conjugation scalariform, tubes formed
by both cells; receptive gametangia cylindric or slightly enlarged; zygospores
mostly ellipsoid, 53-79/* x 83-128/x, all walls smooth, median wall yellow.
Céllulis vegetativis 83-92 x 43-256/i, dissepimentis planis; chromatophoris 2-4, anfractibus
0.5-2; conjugatione scalari; tubo ex utraque cellula conjuganda emisso; cellulis fructiferis
fcylindricis, vel paululum inflatis; zygosporis ellipsoideis 53-79¿i x 83-128/i, mesosporio laevi,
flavescente.
NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN
To be compared with Spirogyra setformis (Roth) Kuetzing from which it
differs in number of chromatophores and smaller size.
Collected by the authors from a small pond at Hymera, Sullivan Countv
Indiana, September 10, 1936.
