Sicyos angulatus L.
Monoecious herbaceous vine, stem 17 mm in diam.
at base, only 3.5 cm between ground level & low-
est branch; very extensively climbing over tree,
shrubs & fence to several meters in all direc-
tions; tendrils branched; lvs . veiny—rugulose
beneath; staminate firs, white w./ green centers
& veins, the larger racemes branched & 20-33. cm
long; frs . up to 3-10 in each capitate cluster,
covered w/ hairs & stiff bristles, the latter
easily detached & sticking in skin & clothing.
Appearing spontaneously as a weed in our gar-
den, perhaps brought in with manure from Wau-
kesha Co. or mulch from Village of Maple Bluff,
but later seen as a yard weed in a nearby
neighborhood on E. Gorham St., Madison.
