Road exit. Vicinity of Bald Eagle State Forest. Elevation
about 1430 feet. Appalachian Mountains. Gneissic rock
ridge, slopes with seeps, humus-rich peaty soil.
Disturbed marsh at base of seepage slope, with
Sphagnum sp. (moss), Juncus effusus, Carex spp.,
Dryopteris spp., Osmunda spp., Glyceria melicaria,
bordered by mesic forest, with Tsuga canadensis,
Quercus rubra, Betula allegheniensis, Kalmia
latifolia. Common fern, leaves soft-leathery, erect,
apparently evergreen, fertile longer than sterile, rooted
in sphagnum moss.
