The verbena with the short thick spikes Seems close to
V. Bonarieneis L. (Small p. 1010). In the key to the Verbenas,
V. Bonariensis is placed with plants having bracts shorter than
the calyx, whereas in the plant sent you today the bracts are
longer than the calyxes. These plants are very common all along
the levees and banks of Bayou Lafourche in the neighboring
Parish of Lafourche, and also occurs on the north bank of Bayou
Terrebonne about a mile above Houma, whence the specimens sent
you were collected by me May 29. The stems reach a hgighth of
14 dm. and foliage is a bright green. Corollas 4*5 mm. high,
limb 3 mm. wide, tube longer than calyx, bract longer than
calyx. Corolla pale-purple or lilac. Plants grow in dry,
sandy soil.
