Growing in deep woodland humus, on a gradual slope; full shade. Associated flora includes Tsuga canadensis, Taxus canadensis, Acer pensylvanicum, Hamamelis virginiana, Quercus prinus, Betula lenta, Dryopteris marginalis, Dryopteris carthusiana.
