Leaves with grey-green splotches over a maroon background. Flowers deep yellow with maroon backs. Growing in humus soil. A thick carpet of E. americanum dominating the forest floor; majority of plants appear to be flowering. Associated flora includes Prunus virginiana, Quercus rubra, Eurybia divaricata, Carya sp.
