Densely twining on grasses and itself, looking like C.
sepium in habit but only up to 80 cm high, flowers
mostly in lower half of plant; corolla white.

20707. Calystegia catesbeiana Pursh subsp.
catesbeiana. This was the first time I had seen this
species in the field and I was surprised how strongly
climbing it was. Although it is very similar to C.
sepium, my intuitive feeling is that it is more closely
related to C. macounii from the Great Plains and C.
spithamaea from further north. The key to
recognising it in this part of the country is the dense
pubescence.	R.K.B.
