Lvcopodium diaitatum is locally common (2000+ ramets) in a former coal strip mine. The site is being invaded by trees and Quercus velutina is dominant (saplings and young trees). The collection comes from a north/northeast-facing, level to moderate slope about 1 meter high. The strobili are infrequent. Lvcopodium diaitatum is associated with Prunus serótina.
