The New York Botanical Garden Lycopodium lagopus (Laest. ex C. Hartm.) G. Zinserl. ex Kuzen. Robbin C. Moran, 2017 (NY) BOTANICAL GARDE** NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 0332980 03329801 Ada Hayden Herbarium Iowa State University Flora of Iowa Lvcopodium clavatum L. Monroe County: Union Township T73N R18W Section 20 SW4 SE4 NE4 SW4 LaHart Wildlife Management Area is approximately 3 miles southwest of Lovilia. It is owned by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and on the Southern Iowa Drift Plain. The collection site is in an oak/hickory forest and west of a small ravine. The soil is mapped as Gosport-Rock outcrop complex, 14 to 40 percent slopes (478G). Typically the surface layer of Gosport silt loam is slightly acid, while the subsoil is commonly very strongly acid. It is a Typic Dystrochrept that formed in a thin silty mantle and in the underlying material weathered from acid Pennsylvanian shale. Rock outcrop is typically sandstone bedrock. Small areas adjacent to the sandstone outcrops have a surface layer of sandy loam. Lvcopodium clavatum is abundant on a west-facing slope just north of what appears to be a formerly bulldozed tractor lane. It is also abundant in the lane, which has been disturbed by fence building this year (plants crushed, soil exposed, shrubs and saplings run over). It is also found just south of the lane. Ramets with cones are rare and only found in the sapling-dominated area just north of the lane. Light yellow cones are releasing yellow spores. Lvcopodium clavatum is associated with Kriaia biflora. Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Pilea pumila. Quercus imbricaria (sapling), Rubus sp. and Solidaao ulmifolia. Lvcopodium diaitatum and Lvcopodium lucidulum also occur near this collection site. Mark J.
