  • Habitat

    Moist evergreen with some deciduous trees, emergents ( Gyranthera caribensis) to 50 m. Canopy dense, ca. 90% cover. Sparse understorey, mainly regenerating trees.

  • Description

    Climber. Leaves smooth, shiny both sides, petioles long with 2 leaf-like stipules at base, and 2 glands, cupping towards lower leaf surface. Tendril and pedicel in each lead axil. Calyx 3-sided pyramidal, pale-green, supporting bud, dividing to 3 lobes 3/4 of the way down as bud opens. Flower 5.5. cm long, 7 cm at widest part. Corolla 5-lobed, pale green on outside, lavender within, inner whorl of 5 petals darker purple, situated opposite outer whorl. Innermost whorl of thin finger-like projections white and purple striped, becoming purple towards apices, white at very apex. Inside corolla tube pale green speckled purple. Style divided in 3, each bearing pale yellow rounded stigmatic disc. Anthers extrorse, yellow; filaments 5, broad, green, fused towards base. Scent strong, sweet, dusky. Found on ground, fruit cases ca. 7 cm diam., thin, woody, possibly previous years fruit.
