Amaranthaceae Amaranthus retroflexus L.
det. M. Nee, 2002
NEW YORK, Ontario Co., 1 mile W of New York State
Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva, at the
experimental plots for vegetable and fruit crops. With
Portulaca oleracea and other annual weeds.
Very similar to 52285 A. hybridus, but without the fresh
green color because of the dense pubescence of light-colored
hairs. Also, the inflorescence branches tend to be shorter and
more congested. Occasional in disturbed soil for weeding
beneath the rows of small apple trees, both species in both
habitats, but this the predominant one here. In annual fields
some could be intermediate, but 95% of all individuals can
be immediately recognized by the habit and especially by the
color. The two species show exactly the same differences as
they do in Richland Co., Wisconsin, although the relative
abundance is reversed.
