Weise Slough Wildlife Management Area is owned by the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources. Jt is approximately 2 miles southeast of the town of
Atalissa. The collection site is about 1 mile north of the Cedar River and
probably has been disturbed by past grazing. The soil here Is Aquolls, ponded,
0 to 2 percent slopes (315), a Typic Hapludoll. This soil has inclusions of
Perks loamy sand, 0 to 3 percent slopes (139), aTypic Udipsamment. Perks
loamy sand is probably the soil at the site, as it is very sandy. Perks loamy
sand formed in alluvium under deciduous trees and prairie. The site is within
the Lake Calvin Basin.
1000+ Phlox bifida occur in a sand prairie opening in a woods north of a
planted sandy field of Panicum virqatum. in sandy places within the woods
(dominated by Betula nigra and Quercus palustris') and the far western side of
the planted:field. The collection is from the sand prairie opening. The corollas
are pale blue-violet. Phlox bifida is associated with Androsace occidentalis.
Lespedeza capitata. Qpuntia humifusa. Poa compressa. Quercus macrocarpa.
Quercus palustris and Selaainella rupestris.
