A marsh and sand prairie occur in the southwest portion of the Vinton airport,
about 0.75 mile north of the city. The soil at the collection site is mapped as
Sparta loamy fine sand, 5 to 9 percent slopes (41C), an Entic Hapludoll. The
marsh and prairie are in the Cedar River watershed and on the Iowan Surface.
There are 300+ Phlox bifida in flower and fruit (past peak bloom) on a sandy
slope west of the marsh. The corollas ranged from a pale blue-purple to a dark
purple blue. Phlox bifida Is associated with Lithospermum caroliniense.
