4. Paronychia fastigiata (Raf.) Fernald. Annual, with forked erect
or low-spreading and diffuse puberulent stems, 5—25 cm. tall." Leaves of
the Drimary branches narrowly elliptic-lanceolate to oblanceolate, acute to

obtuse, 0.5--2.Q cm. long, frequently white-punctate or granular-punctate.
Foliar bracts extending through the repeatedly forked cymes. Calyx 2—5 ®m.
long* glabrous or scantily puberulent, the sepals linear, lanceolate, 1—5~
nerved. Tips of the hooded apex abruptly apiculate or short-awned. Utricle
glabrous. Seed Dlump, oval, about 0.8 mm. long, very dark red and smooth.
Var. tyrùca Fernald. Erect oi^Low and diffused, Leaves 1—2 cm.
long, usually serrulate. Stipular bracts lanceolate, equaling or shorter
than the calyx. Style much shorter than the ovary.
Var. palaacea Fernald. Similar to the above but with stipular bracts
lanceolate-attenuate and equaling <?r mostly surpassing the calyx.
Var. Nuttallii (Small) Fernald. Similar to the var. typica, but the
senals with a stout white awn about 0.2 mm. long.
Var. pumila (Wood) Fernald. Low, diffusely and usually horizontally
branched plants. Leaves 0.7—1*2 cm. long, entire. Stipules ovate-lanceolate,
ciliolate. Style as long as the ovary.
