The New York Botanical Garden Plants of U.S.A. CARYOPHYLLACEAE Paronychia canadensis (L.) Wood Dense small patches a few square dm. in size, on bare soil around rock outcrops, also found in adjacent thicker woods on ridge top, here confined to dense patches in rings around the base of one tree and one old stump but nowhere else on the forest floor which has a thick layfer of leaves. These latter plants are darker green, with larger leaves, and less mature. Tiny opening with rock outcrops (probably calcareous) on top of rocky ridge, thin ungrazed woods of Quercus alba, Q. macrocarpa, Carya ovata, with Pteridium aquilinum, Rhus aromatica ( ! ! ), a few remnant prairie plants such as Amorpha canescens, Coreopsis palmata.
