Gray and Mimulus nanus Hooker & Arnott var. mephiticus (E. Greene) D. Thompson CALIFORNIA: Inyo Co. 9.0 mi W of Hwy 395 along Whitney Portal Road, T15N, R35E, NWfc S30, elev. 7200 ft (2200 m). Level sandy wash areas at base of slides of granitic sand on S side of road. Also at 8.7 mi W. Very common locally—hundreds of plants. No mature seeds yet but many plants no longer flowering. The herbivore-damaged plants are resprouting and flowering. Corolla dark magenta, almost red-purple, paler or yellowish on proximal and lower (ventral) parts of tube-throat exterior; throat floor yellow with scattered small reddish dots, a red-purple midvein radiating onto base of each lobe of lower lip, a dark red-purple flare reddening as it extends from throat onto the 2 upper lip lobes from throat; additional red-purple bordering yellow area.
