GóUJNSIA callosa Parish; Erythea, 7:96. 1899.
No. 8290, collected May 21, in the first canyon in the Sierra
foothills south of Bishop, Inyo county, growing on steep slopes
in coarse granite sand. Plentiful there but not seen elsewhere.
Since the plant was different in appearance from any in the
genus known to me, a description was made from living mate-
rial, parts of which may supplement Mr. Parish’s description.
Calyx campanulate, in flower 5 mm. long, 4 mm. across, the
base truncate, tube equaling the lanceolate practically equal
lobes: corollas violet purple, about 9 mm. long, the upper lip
strongly gibbous 1 mm. above the base, 5 mm. long, broadly cu-
néate, 4 mm. wide above, 3 mm. wide below, the apex notched
for nearly 2 mm., the lobes rounded and obtuse, lower half of
the lip whitish, marked on the inside with small purple dots
and with two small callosities at the base; lower lip a little nar-
rower, than the upper, the lateral lobes more oblong and slightly
turned back toward the keel-like middle lobe, which is 1 mm.
shorter, quite narrow, a little over 1 mm. deep: style filiform.
