ssp. claviformis
MOJAVE DESERT: ca 0.85 mi W of Three Sisters & 1.2
mi S of Black Butte. Bladed road heading N from Black
Butte Basin Road x Avenue TJ1 [not on 1968 topo],
running northward to the W of BBB Rd for about 1.2
miles, then rejoining it NW of Three Sisters [buttes]. El
Mirage USGS 7.5' Quadrangle; T5N R8W, SW/4 SW/4
NE/4 section 9. Elevation ca 3100-3110 feet.
Open desert dominated by Larrea tridentata with
scattered Yucca brevifolia. Substrate a very fine sand
(almost Wow-sand).
Annual, occurring in a very localized population near
the foot of a Joshua Tree; a strikingly attractive plant with
white petals and a "throat" of deep red; hypanthium ca 4-5
mm long.
