Depto. Santa Cruz, Prov. Andres Ibanez, W side
of Santa Cruz, Avenida Pirai, between 2nd and
3rd Anillos. 17°47'S, 63°12fW alt. 420 m.
"mapajo" Large tree 15 m. tall, 75 cm. in
diameter. Sandy soil. Probably an original
forest tree, or at least native, one other
large tree of this species along Ave. Pirai.
All branches covered with broad-based spines
and a few found on the trunk; trunk slightly
buttressed at base, to 1 m. high, then
cylindrical, with gray-brown, coarsely fur-
rowed bark. Leaves glossy dark green above,
green below. Flowers held ± horizontal,
withered in the daytime, these collections
from the ground; petals shiny golden-brown;
calyx yellow-green. Just began blooming a day
or two ago, continued to produce flowers
steadily until last observed on March 8, 1987,
the other tree also blooming in the same
manner. Observed again on July 8 to Sept. 3,
1987, then loosing leaves; this tree produced
no fruits and the other tree only a few large
spindle-shaped green fruits. Voucher for
flowers from this tree collected for National
Cancer Institute screening, February, 1988.
