"mapajo" Large tree, 15 m. tall, 65 cm. in
diameter, undoubtedly native from the time
this part of the city was countryside; trunk
and branches covered with broad-based,
coarse, sharp spines. Fallen flowers abun-
dant on ground. Flowers in all stages from
bud to open on tree, apparently opening in
late afternoon; petals with golden hairs;
filaments white; anthers and pollen orange.
