Amsinckia tessellata A. Gray var. tessellata
San Emigdio Range: Pleito Hills region, San Emigdio Ranch, ridge on
west side of Pleito Canyon, approximately 4.5 air miles due north of
Antimony Peak. Near 34° 56’ 36.7’N 119° 06’ 41.5”W. T10N
R21W N 1/2 sec. 22. Elev. 3600 - 4000 Feet
Relatively gentle ridgetop with deep, friable adobe soil, southerly
slopes gravelly, grading into very barren areas of dark, highly
weathered volcanic substrate with very thin soil.
Ridgetop and more mesic exposures with open woodland of Quercus
douglasii and Juniperus californica, xeric slopes more open with
scattered Juniperus, Chrysothamnus nauseosus, Eriogonum
fasciculatum var. polifolium, Ribes quercetorum, and Penstemon
centranthifolius.
Annual, flowers orange, calyx lobes 4. Locally common on mesic
adobe soil.
