Liebre Mountains region: North base of Portal Ridge, north of the San
Andreas Rift Zone at the edge of the Antelope Valley, upper mouth of
Cow Spring Canyon along the Pacific Crest Trail. Near 34° 45’
15.2”N 118° 37’ 52.8”W. T8N R17W. Elev. 3600 Feet.
Slopes of fault-altered granite and metasediment.
Vegetation a relatively open scrub of Pinus sabiniana, Adenostoma
fasciculatum, Quercus john-tuckeri, Eriogonum fasciculatum, and
Chrysothamnus nauseosus, grading into xeric grassland with Stipa
speciosa, Poa secunda, Melica imperfecta, Bromus spp., Avena spp.,
and Corethrogyne filaginifolia.
Shrub, flowers purple. Locally common at interface between
grassland and scrub, apparently in an area which burned a couple of
years earlier.
