Woods on gentle slope, Populus tremuloides, Ulmus
thomasii, Carpinus caroliniana, Corylus americana.
Shrubs to 2.5 m. tall, in opening and at edge, in loose
colonies or clumps, with straight, erect stems to 2.5 cm. in
diaemter. Voucher for wood specimens in Kw, Lw,
MADw, MEXUw, RSAw. Undeveloped staminate
inflorescences for year 2017 hanging, greenish-white,
generally on different twigs from the fruits. Fruiting
involucre yellow-green.
