Unshaded fencerow between cultivated fields, broad flat valley
bottom of Pine River, but above floodplain. With Ambrosia
trifida, young Quercus macrocarpa, Ilex verticillata, Phalaris
arundinacea.
Dense clump of ca. 25 stems, 1.6 m. tall, 1.3 cm. in diameter.
Leafy and flowering stems with only axillary spines; lower
portion of younger stems light tan, with axillary spines and
abundant reflexed bristly intemodal spines; oldest stems
unarmed, dark, the bark beginning to peel. Voucher for wood
specimen, MADw. Flowers hanging; sepals pale yellow-green
with red-pink in middle; petals inconspicuous, pinkish; anthers
pale yellow.
