Conanthus Wats. Bot. King Rep. 256. 1871
Thirteen years ago, in Cont. U. S. Nat Herb. 4s 161-162,
Mr. Coville. called attention to the fact that this genus and our
western plants formerly called Natna are not sufficiently distinct
1 to be kept apart, the weak character of united or separate styles
I failing in one species, but strangely referred the type of Conan-
thus to Kuntze’s Marilaunidium. Most botanists itt this coun-
j try have persisted in using Kuntze’s name, but apparently with-
I out giving due study to the plants. A careful examination of
I flowers from al) the species will no doubt show that more of
I them have united styles, and even if it does not, the character is
I hot strong enough to separate plants so like in habit and aspect,
\ But l am of the opinion that a little careful work will dernon-
1 Strate the fact that if the name Marilaunidium is to be used at
I all, it must be restricted to the plant of the southeastern United
I States and the West indies, the original Natna jatnaicen.se L.
I Conanthus posillus Lemmon, in Heller, Cat. 6. 1898.
Natna pusillutn Lemmon, in Gray, Proc. Am. Acad. J$0s
304, 1885.

* Sierra foothills west of Bishop, Inyo county. A homely little
plant, the type collected in the Mojave desert near the Calico
?mine. Ran TWwardino county. __________
