Woods on formerly pastured narrow ridge with Cambrian
sandstone outcrops, with large open-gr.own Quercus
macrocarpa, Q. rubra, Q. rubra, and much smaller trees of
Acer saccharum, Ulmus rubra, Ostrya virginiana, Tilia
americana and understory of Zanthoxylum americanum, and a
few Berberis thunbergii and Elaeagnus umbellata\ apparently
the same place where Berberis vulgaris collected in 1969 (Nee
1813), but this no longer present.
Ca. 2 dozen plants of this species, well-established, with no
indication of having been planted and with no other planted
species in the vicinity. Shrub with 3 stems from the base;
young twigs green, the older ones with brown wings.. Voucher
for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw,
the wood specimen from the largest stem, 4.5 cm. in diameter,
ca. 18 years old. Flowers yellow-green, odorless (3:30 P.M.,
sunny).
