Old field, grassy (European cool season grasses, Poa,
Agropyron repens) but without any native prairie plants,
slightly rolling, sandy terrace above Wisconsin River
floodplain. Evidently an old habitation site, with a few
Syringa vulgaris, Salix “weeping willow”, Acer ginnala,
with more recent plantings of Caragana arborescens,
Viburnum lantana, Corylus americana, Physocarpus
opulifolius along edge of Pinus resinosa plantation.
Loose patch, still expanding with young sprouts on the
periphery, to 3.5 m. tall, the central (oldest) stems to 10 cm.
diameter and all leaning, tortuous and/or hollow. Voucher
for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw.
This wood specimen 6.5 cm. in diameter. Inflorescences
erect, the flowers past anthesis and light brown, but a few
still lilac-colored.
