Old field, grassy (European cool season grasses, Poa,
Agropyron repens) but without any native prairie plants,
slightly rolling, sandy terrace above Wisconsin River
floodplain. Evidently an old habitation site, with a few
Syringa vulgaris, Salix “weeping willow”, Acer ginnala,
with more recent plantings of Caragana arborescens,
Viburnum tantana, Corylus americana, Physocarpus
opulifolius along edge of Pinus resinosa plantation.
Several stems in a tight clump, 3.5 m. tall, to 5.5 cm. in
diameter. Sapwood pale, the heartwood a slightly darker
tan. Voucher for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw,
MEXUw, RSAw. Flowers inconspicuous, pale greenish.
No evidence that this species becoming spontaneous here.
