  • Description

    Pileus 2-7 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, heavily rugulose wrinkled to pitted to finely rugulose areolate, becoming deeply areolate cracked with age and/or in dry weather, dry to moist, without sterile projecting margin, 6F6-7E6-6E6, sometimes bruising to a very dark brown to nearly black. Flesh white, changing to pink then fuscous, often remaining pink, up to 1 cm thick, with mild odor and taste. Tubes depressed to deeply depressed around the stipe, nearest (4A4) when young, becoming near (5C6-5-4) with age, staining pinkish brown when exposed; pores concolorous throughout development, staining likewise, occasionally reaching 1 mm broad. Stipe 6-10 cm long, 10-15 mm broad, clavate, dry, scabrous ridged when young with gray scabers on a white to pale gray ground, more heavily scabrous with fine black scabers in age on a white ground, with white mycelium at base assuming a pale blue tint when picked; interior white, blue green at base and sometimes upward, otherwise, pink at first.
