Flora of the Paumonek Wetland, Long Island
Persicaria virginiana (L.) Gaert.
NEW YORK, SUFFOLK CO.: Huntington Station, in the Paumonek
Wetland, west of Walt Whitman High School. Medium sized clump
on a slight slope in humus rich woodsy soil. Solid green leaves;
flowers white, male flowers above the female flowers on the
slender raceme. Ocreae pubescent. Flowers visited by golden-
brown ants. Growing in an Oak-Hickory Mesic Woodland with
Tilia cordata, Juglans nigra, Lindera benzoin, Maianthemum
racemosum, and Eurybia divaricata.
