Chalone Creek, San Benito County, in the upper Sonoran Zone
of the South Coast Ranges, at about 300 m. altitude.
Growing on flats and lower slopes in gravelly soil along the road
to Vancouver Pinnacles, scattered among thickets of Adenostema
fasciculatum.
This species has not been known hitherto from north of Arroyo
Seco, Monterey County. It was originally collected by Douglas,
probably on his trip from Monterey to Santa Barbara, but the
exact locality is not known.
Plants shrubby, 1 to 2 m. high, with long wand-like branches.
Bracts reddish: corolla, stamens, and style purple, often tinged
with blue.
