Blackmun Prairie, a former pasture owned by the Iowa Natural Heritage
Foundation, is about 12 miles west/northwest of Parkersburg and on the Iowan
Surface. Trichostema brachiatum is locally common in a dry tallgrass prairie
on the upper portion of a moderate, west-facing slope in the north quarter of
the site. Wilted flowers (few genets have flowers) are a medium purple-blue
and most genets have fruits. Trichostema brachiatum is associated with
Asclepias verticillata. Aster azureus. Bouteloua curtipendula. Dalea purpurea.
Linum sulcatum. Lithospermum incisum. Muhlenberaia cuspidata.
Schizachvrium scoparium. and Solidaao nemoralis. The upper half of the
slope has fist sized pieces of limestone on the soil surface. The soil at the
collection site is Sogn loam, 9 to 30 percent slopes (412F), a Lithic Haplustoll.
