Rafinesquia neomexicana Gray
Mcsic etiolated annual; basal rosette leaves turning purple and
withering early, up to 10-15 cm. long, sinuately lobed, cauline
leaves reduced, outer short involucral bracts reflexed, ligules
white, rosy-tinged dorsally. Growing up through rigid, intrica-
tely branching small shrubs (Franseria, etc.) and not found in
open; sandy soil of desert wash, Yucca-Larrea-Franseria associa-
tion, altitude ca. 2800 feet. Smoke Tree Wash, ca. 5 miles north-
east of Cottonwood Springs, Joshua Tree National Monument,
Riverside County.
