Josephine E. Tilden. American Algae.
392. Zygnema chalybeospermum Hansg. in Hedwigia. 257, 1888.
Vegetative cells 25 mic. in diameter, 1-2.5 times as long as broad; fruct-
iferous cells no shorter than vegetative, ventricose on one side (appar-
ently the one from which the conjugating tube extended), not so on the
other; zygote globose, 22-25 mic. in diameter, with smooth median mem-
brane; membrane of cells very thin and delicate.
In waterfall in creek.
Baird point, Strait of Juan de Fuca, Vancouver island, British Columbia.
J. E, T. 4 Au 1898.
The plant does not agree satisfactorily with the above species, but the
smooth median membrane of the zygote and the apparently scalariform
conjunction of the filaments bring it nearer this than any other in the
section. Some of the more mature zygotes show a decided bluish tint
in the membrane, but in the younger ones this is not apparent. It agrees
well in habitat.
