THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL H I LL DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY February 27, 1957 Mr* Joseph Monachino New York Botanical Garden Bronx Park New York 58, New York Dear Mr, Monachino: V Thank you very much for your letter of Feb* 25* You were very generous with your time in checking all the references for me and I sincerely appreciate it* I am sorry to say that I am not sure I agree that the Sesbania specimens are the same* My specimen $18154 seems to be the odd one. The dark flowered plant with the purple suffused through the standard seems to be the common plant here* It is also the same plant I observed in southern Illinois. The clear yellow flowered plant was only observed at this one locality and in addition to the difference in color had smaller flowers. If you have not sent your paper in for publication as yet I can send you specimens on loan of some additional specimens of the Hypochaeris elata from two stations in Beaufort Co. and an additional one from Allendale Co. all in South Carolina. At North Carolina State University there are two specimens of this plant misidentified as Hypochaeris radicata and at Duke University one labeled H* brasilfefensis from Florida * I believe all of these are the same* You may wish to write and borrow them. At the same time you may wish to borrow two sheets of Crotalaria from Duke, one labeled £* intermedia and the other C * lanceolata, both I believe are the same as I sent you, but from Florida* May I again thank you very much for your help* Sincerely yours, <S.aM+- Harry Ahles p de La Plata: Herbario LP.
