Scleria verticillata Muhl. ex Willd.
Fayette Co.: Smithfield Township T92N R8W
Sec 16 E2 SW4 SE4 NE4
Site is approximately 4.5 miles
east-northeast of downtown Maynard. Kauten
Fen, an 8+ acre fen about 0.75 mile east of
Iowa highway 150 and less then 0.2 mile
west of a gravel road. The main owner has
disked and tiled his portion of the fen,
sprayed strong herbicide on it, plowed the
edges and has even used dynamite. Despite
all these attempts to convert this site to
row crops, it remains a fairly good fen.
The soil in the fen is Palms muck, 1-4%
slopes (221), a Terric Medisaprist. It is
in the Turkey River watershed and on the
Iowan Surface.
10,000+ ramets in fruit. They grew in
moist muck in the north and east halves of
the fen. S. verticillata appears to grow
even in moist, plcwed muck at the edge of
the fen. This is the first reported site
of S. verticillata in Fayette county and
only the second known site on the Iowan
Surface [the first known collection of S.
verticillata on the Iowan Surface was made
in Chickasaw county on August 11, 1987
(Leoschke 420 ISC)]. S. verticillata was
associated with Eupatorium perfoliatum.
Lobelia sibhilitica, Lvsimachia
auadriflora. Lvthrum alatum. Pamassia
glauca and Solidacro riddellii. The pH of
surface water in this fen was 6.7.
