Scleria verticillata Muhl. ex Willd.
Emmet County: Emmet Township T100N R34W Section 34 NW4NE4NW4SE4
An approximately half acre calcareous fen, owned by Ms Armella O’Brien, is
found in a pasture east of County Road N26. It is about 2.5 miles north-
northwest of the intersection of State Highways 4 and 9 in Estherville. The fen
is east of a stream that is a tributary of the West Fork of the Des Moines River
and on the Des Moines Lobe. It is on a west-facing gentle slope, about 0.1
mile southeast of a house. The best portion of the fen is the south one-quarter.
The soil in the fen appears to be a muck. The soil above the fen is Storden-
Salida complex, 5 to 14 percent slopes, moderately eroded (639D2). Storden
is a calcareous Typic Udorthent and Salida is a sandy-skeletal Entic Hapludoll.
1000+ ramets are found growing on the moist banks of a spring-fed brook in
the south one-quarter of the fen. Here Scleria verticillata is associated with
Eriophorum anaustifolium. Gentianopsis procera. Lobelia kalmii.
Pvcnanthemum virainianum and Rhvnchospora capillacea. 2000+ ramets
occur north of the brook, where Scleria verticillata is common on the edges of
small pools.
