An approximately 2 acre, average quality mesic tallgrass prairie occurs on a
south-facing slope (owned by Roger Howell) about 2.2 miles north/northeast of
Stuart. It is east of County Road P28 (Wagon Road) and north of an artificial
pond. The prairie was probably burned at least 3 weeks ago. The soil here is
Gara loam, 14 to 18 percent slopes, moderately eroded (179E2), a Mollic
Hapludalf. The prairie is on the Southern Iowa Drift Plain.
Scleria trialomerata is infrequent and in bloom. It is associated with Antennaria
nealecta. Aster azureus. Desmodium canadense. Ervngium yuccifolium.
Helianthus riaidus. Lespedeza capitata. Liatris aspera. Poa pratensis. Silphium
laciniatum and Sisvrinchium campestre.
