Montgomery County: East Jackson Township T71N R36W Section 7

Viking Lake State Park, owned by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources,
is located about 3.5 miles east-southeast of Stanton. An approximately two
acre, average quality mesic prairie (severely eroded in places) is found on a
generally west-facing slope in the southeast portion of the park. It is southeast
of the campground and south of the sewage lagoon. The prairie appears to
have been burned this past spring since litter is sparse and there are few
standing plant stems from last year. The soil at the collection site is Bucknell
silty clay loam, 9 to 14 percent slopes, moderately eroded (423D2), an Udollic
Ochraqualf. The prairie is on the Southern Iowa Drift Plain (southwest unit).
Scleria trialomerata is locally common in the southwest portion of the prairie.
The fruits are mostly green, while a small percentage are white. Scleria
trialomerata is associated with Chamaecrista fasciculata. Dalea purpurea.
Gentiana puberulenta. Lespedeza capitata. Liatris squarrosa. Lobelia spicata.
Silphium laciniatum. Solidaao riaida and Sorahastrum nutans.
