Colony; primocanes 1 m. tall or less; floricanes arching, to 2 m. tall, often purple-glaucous, with many bristles but no strong prickles, the papery bark peeling off with the bristles leaving a smooth brown stem. Pith pale brown. Petals white, erect, ± appressed into a cone; flowers visited by honeybees. Thicket on' E facing slope, fencerow between cultivated field and pasture, with Prunus cf. americana, P. vir- giniana, Ulmus rubra, Carya ovata. 3 miles southeast of RICHLAND CENTER.
