ROSACEAE Low-arching to creeping subshrub, stems somewhat elongated but not tip-rooting; prickles rigid. Locally common, forming a solid patch not mixed with other Rubus spp. In a narrow, over-grown pine barrens remnant on sandy/gravelly soil (Adams loamy sand, 3 to 8 percent slopes; sandy, isotic, frigid Typic Haplorthods). Growing with Aster linariifolius, Betula populifolia, Cladonia arbuscula, C. rangiferina, Comptonia peregrina, Dichanthelium clandestinum, Diphasiastrum complanatum, Festuca sp., Juniperus communis, Lycopodium dendroideum, Maianthemum canadense, Pinus resinosa, P. rigida, P. strobus, Populus tremuloides, Quercus ilicifolia, Q. rubra, Rubus setosus, Schizachyrium scoparium, Solidago rugosa, Spiraea alba, & Vaccinium angustifolium (rare).
