DETERMINATION BY
In the Pacific Northwest, Grindelia stricta var. stricta occurs at
shorelines (ocean, bays, sloughs, saltmarshes), G. hirsutula
vars. hirsutula and/or davyioccur in relatively montane
(windward) sites, G. integrifolia occurs in dry pastures that
were probably vernally wet, and G. nana, a species of the
Great Basin, is adventive in disturbed areas. When any two (or
more) of these taxa come into contact with one another,
hybridization is likely and the distinguishing characters (which
are not completely definitive to begin with) intergrade. This
specimen is from such a locality. It is annotated with the name
of the taxon it most closely resembles, but may have
characters of one or more of the others as well.—Meredith A.
Lane, July 1993.
