Rhynchospora capillacea Torrey
Cerro Gordo Co.: Lime Creek Township T97N R20W Sec 31 S2 NE4
NE4 SW4
The site is approximately 0.5 mile north of the corporate boundary of
Mason City. A less than 1 acre fen (owned by Margaret Wander) north
of a tributary of Willow Creek and less than 0.1 mile south of a gravel
county road. It is south of crop land. The fen has an excellent sedge
niat zone, the best one I have seen on the Iowan Surface, in the
western 1 /3 of the fen. It is unusual for an Iowan Surface fen to have a
sedge mat zone— sedge mat zones are more commonly found in Des
Moines Lobe fens. There are lots of bits of tufa in the top 5
centimeters of muck in the sedae mat zone. The muck here also has a
mild sulfur smell. The eastern 2/3 of the fen is very disturbed and is
dominated by Phlaris aruncfinacea (the sedge mat zone cannot be seen
from the gravel road). A small brook runs through the sedge mat zone.
The soil here is Palms muck, 1-4% slopes (221B), a Terric Medisaprist.
The fen is in the Winnebago River watershed and on the Iowan Surface.
5000+ ramets, the dominant species in the sedge mat zone. With
Carex lasiocarpa, Lobelia kalmii, Lysimachia quadrrflora, Muhlenbergia
glomerata, Parnassia glauca and Triglochin maritima.	'
