I have to thank you for taking so inuch pains with that
solitary leaf* I send you a good sised specimen "by this mail and would
like to have you see if you cannot get it into 1»rotundifollum. The sub-
ject is interesting to me because I been fostering the idea that a specimen
is identified when an agreement is made with the book in essential .particu-
lars, and I mist say that rotundifolinm ril. »agrees only in soil and location,
ana southern Mass.is no gre^t ways from Gray's location of I I* I certain^
found the plant in abundance along with craraberrie s^near the sea.
I don't like pubescens because I fail to find over five flowers in any
head, because it was not found in dry soil, and because the teeth are not in
any way acutish. The pubescence is not at all puberulent.
I don’t like verben If ollum because the leaves are clearly not rounded at
base, but all truncate and some a little cordate. They are all with a very
short petiole, clearly not "closely sessile“. The three nerves are very
plain on the fresh leaf, but obscure on the dried specimen.
I cannot trust to soil as a definite character. Here is Spiraea tomentoa
given as in swamps and low grounds, while it is aTainaant in dry pastures
and pretty much anywhere else, and there are many cases.Acer rubrum .etc.
I venture to put in a specimen that I cannot find'find a family for,al-
though I have searched-both Britton and Gray, and looKed at every picture
in the formed.
yours very tr^iy t
