Tree to 7.6 m. Flowers malodorous; petals white, anthers purple-black
to rose-red. Very twiggy with thom-like branches. New leaves rolled
with brown hairs along the veins. 1 of 2 trees. Growing in a brushy 21
year old old-field with Juniperus virginiana, Lonicera japonica,
Alliaria petiolata, Geum, Malus and Prunus serotina.
