ROSACEAE Prunus serotina Ehrh.
Tree 12 m. tall, 40 cm. in diameter; bark dark, gray-
black, the conspicuously lenticellate young bark breaking
up into flakes, orange where broken. Twigs with bitter
taste. Leaves shiny on both sides, dark green above,
light green below.
Fruit just beginning to ripen, first green, becoming
tinged with red which spreads and deepens into dark
red-purple and finally black, juicy, edible but somewhat
bitter, to maximum diameter of 1 cm.
With two other trees of this species and Ulmus
americana, road bank along Hwy. 14, a common native
species in the area.
